WINNERS
Stony Brook: What more can be said? The Seawolves (4-1) accomplished a feat several years in the making, knocking off Army, 22-3, on the road. And it wasn’t just a fluke of a win. Miguel Maysonet ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns. The Seawolves defense limited Army’s potent rushing game to 273 yards (and 4 turnovers). The 273 yards sounds like a lot, but Army came into the game averaging 399 yards per game on the ground. The win put Stony Brook on track to do a lot more, including dominate the Big South. It will also stir up talk of the Seawolves (again) looking to move up from the FCS level.
Geno Smith (and West Virginia): The numbers are too crazy to believe. West Virginia QB Geno Smith threw for 656 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday’s 70-63 win over Baylor. What may have been most impressive about his performance was that he completed 45 of 51 passes. More importantly, West Virginia (4-0, 1-0 BIG 12) has proven itself to be a real player in the conference, worthy of its No. 9 rank. Oh, and Smith (1,072 yds, 12 TDs, 0 INT) is without a doubt a Heisman favorite.
Washington: Washington’s 17-13 win over Stanford proves two things. It proves the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 PAC-12) 41-3 loss to LSU was a little overblown. It also proves that the PAC-12 is up for grabs, something we’ve been thinking and saying all along. This win also makes next week’s battle between Washington and Oregon a must-see.
Louisville: Under normal circumstances, Louisville (5-0, 2-0 Big East) barely beating Southern Miss (21-17) wouldn’t rate much on the Richter scale. But considering the state of the Big East, any win that keeps you undefeated is a good win.
Just by staying 5-0 with its 51-44 win over Tennessee makes Georgia a winner. Florida State (5-0, 2-0 ACC) struggled a bit in its 30-17 win over South Florida, but is still undefeated and Ohio State, although prohibited from playing in a bowl game, will still be a factor in the Big Ten after its 17-16 win over Michigan State.
LOSERS
Stanford: Can you say let down? We know it was a road game, but if the Cardinal wants to be considered contender, you have to come back from a big win with another big win.
John L. Smith (and Arkansas): Saturday’s 58-10 loss to Texas A&M could be the first step in the downfall of coach John L. Smith.
Virginia Tech: Saturday’s 27-24 loss at Cincinnati probably dashes any hopes the Hokies had of getting a BCS at-large bid. Now they have to win the ACC.
