Will Casey scored the winning goal with 52 seconds left in the first overtime to lift third-seeded Stony Brook over sixth-seeded Binghamton, 5-4, Saturday in a quarterfinal of the America East men's soccer championship. Stony Brook (11-5-1), which trailed 4-2 with less than 17 minutes remaining, tied the game with 45 seconds left on a goal by Alejandro Fritz.

Fritz tied America East championship single-game records for goals (two) and points (five), records he shares with teammate Leo Fernandes. Fritz assisted on the Seawolves' first goal in the 10th minute in addition to his two goals.

Stony Brook plays at No. 2 UMBC in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Hofstra advances to title game. Goalkeeper Emily Morphitis had three saves and made two stops in a shootout, including a diving save on Nicole Baxter's fourth-round attempt, as the Hofstra women's team upset top-seeded William & Mary, 4-2, Friday night to advance to the CAA championship game.

Sam Scolarici, Jeannine Molleda, Anya Koren and Brooke Bendernagel each scored in the shootout for the fifth-seeded Pride as the teams played to a scoreless draw.

Hofstra will face third-seeded UNC-Wilmington (12-6-3) in the CAA championship Sunday at 1 p.m. at Albert/Daly Field on the campus of William & Mary. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Hofstra has won the CAA championship twice, with its last title coming in 2007. UNC-Wilmington last won the conference championship in 2009.

UNC-Wilmington also needed a shootout to move past second-seeded Drexel in the other semifinal, winning 4-1. Hofstra won the regular season meeting in Wilmington, 1-0, on Sept. 20. Pride freshman Jill Mulholland scored in the 87th minute of that game.

 

FOOTBALL

Union College 51, USMMA 7: Quarterback Alex Coviello scored on a 37-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the game, but Union scored 51 unanswered points to down USMMA (4-5, 2-4) in Liberty League play. Coviello finished with 51 rushing yards and completed 4of 8 passes for 79 yards as the Mariners mustered only 229 total yards on offense. Mario Colangelo added 78 rushing yards on 16 carries, and Michael Biehn had seven tackles.

Connor Eck completed 15 of 18 passes for 265 yards and three scores to lead Union (5-4, 5-1). Kyle Reynolds had five catches for 117 yards and two scores.

USMMA closes its season at home Saturday against St. Lawrence.
