Dubin family pledges $5 million to Stony Brook University for indoor training center

The cornerstone for Stony Brook athletic department's fundraising campaign to build a $10 million indoor training center fell into place Thursday when alum Glenn Dubin and his wife Eva announced a $5 million pledge in the form of a matching challenge grant. All gifts restricted for the Indoor Training Center Fund between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016 will count toward the goal.
Building a state-of-the-art indoor training facility for football and other sports is the first major step in athletic director Shawn Heilbron's five-year plan initiated in June to make major improvements to the athletic program and especially the football program. Plans call for the indoor facility to have a 100-yard synthetic turf practice field, a 90-foot ceiling, modern lighting, film equipment, sound and video systems and other support facilities, including restrooms and storage.
Dubin, who was a member of the football and lacrosse teams, previously donated $4.3 million in 2010 for a strength and conditioning facility known as the Dubin Family Performance Center, and he contributed $1 million in 2005 to endow a scholarship fund for students from Washington Heights in New York City and particularly from P.S. 132, where he attended elementary school.
"With this challenge pledge, I hope to inspire Seawolves friends, fans and family to support current and future Stony Brook athletes," Dubin said in a statement. "We wanted to kick-start the campaign and rally the Stony Brook community around the athletic department. Stony Brook Athletics has substantial and significant aspirations for the near future, and excellent facilities are a necessary component to realize these aspirations and achieve success."
Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, Stony Brook University president, said, "Over the past decade, Glenn and Eva Dubin have shown incredible vision and had a tremendous impact on Stony Brook Athletics. This new challenge match gives others the opportunity to play an active role in the success of our student-athletes and our athletic program."
Heilbron and football coach Chuck Priore also praised Dubin, who heads his own private investment company in New York, for his commitment to the growth of Stony Brook Athletics.
