He was an afterthought for four years at Syracuse, but transfer John Kinder was named Stony Brook's starting quarterback by coach Chuck Priore on Tuesday, winning the nod over redshirt junior Conor Bednarski and redshirt sophomore Carlos Hernandez.

The former Lawrence High star from Inwood will lead the Seawolves in their Aug. 28 season opener against Bryant at LaValle Stadium.

"John's overall athleticism and ability to escape and make plays with his feet adds a different dimension to our offense," Priore said in a statement. "He's still learning the offense, but I think he gives us the best chance to be a dynamic offense."
