Stony Brook basketball players Rayshaun McGrew and DeShaun Thrower have been charged with third degree grand larceny and third degree criminal mischief as the result of an alleged theft that took place on Wednesday, a university police spokesman confirmed Monday. Both charges are felonies.

McGrew and Thrower both played in Stony Brook’s first-ever NCAA Tournament game against Kentucky on March 17, and both appeared Monday morning at a news conference to announce the hiring of men’s basketball coach Jeff Boals. Neither commented on the case because details had not yet been made public. McGrew is a senior who is expected to graduate in May, and Thrower is a sophomore with two more years of eligibility.

A hearing on the case has been scheduled for May 2 in Suffolk First District Court. The two players also are subject to a student disciplinary hearing, which is expected to take place this week. University police declined a request for the identity of the accuser and further details about the incident. No athletic department officials were permitted to comment.

The school released a statement about the incident that said: “Stony Brook University takes all allegations of student misconduct seriously. All students are subject to the University’s Student Conduct Code and the University is taking appropriate action according to that code.”
