The Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team has cracked the win column.

Patrick Kaschalk recorded three goals and two assists, and Tom Haun added two goals and one assist to propel the Seawolves to their first victory of the season, 11-9, at Fairfield on Saturday.

After beginning the season 0-4, Stony Brook coach Jim Nagle was thrilled with the selfless effort his team put together on the road. And while the Seawolves still find themselves in an early hole, he doesn’t think they should be written off just yet.

“It was really great for the guys to bounce back and get a win today,” Nagle said. “I felt we pulled together and played for each other for the first time all year. We have lots of lacrosse left to play.”

Stony Brook was in control from the outset of the match, with Kaschalk scoring the opening goal less than two minutes in. Haun then added two of the next three goals to give the Seawolves a 4-0 lead at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter.

Despite winning by a slim margin, Stony Brook made its presence known throughout the day. Rees Ryland’s third goal of the season off an assist from Haun extended the Seawolves’ advantage to 9-3 entering halftime. An unassisted goal by Kaschalk with 4:53 left in the third followed by an unassisted goal from Tyler Anderson a mere seven seconds later ballooned the lead to 11-4.

With Stony Brook taking its foot off the gas from that point forward, the final five goals of the match belonged to Fairfield. The Seawolves, however, maintained a three-goal lead with 3:11 to go following Jack Brennan’s second score.

Stony Brook will look to build upon its first win of the season next Saturday, as it welcomes Virginia at 1 p.m.
