Stony Brook lost in its first NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament game since 2012 on Wednesday night, falling 10-6 to Marist in the opening round in Poughkeepsie. Collin Williamson scored five of Stony Brook’s goals in the season-low output for the team. Jake Lewis (Calhoun HS) scored the only other goal for the Seawolves.

“We just didn’t play our best,” Stony Brook coach Anthony Gilardi said

Freshman goalie Richie Metzger (Carey HS) made nine saves for Marist, including two on back-to-back shots with a minute left in the game, the second of them while sprawled on the turf.

Stony Brook took 37 shots but committed 15 turnovers, eight of them unforced. Senior goalie Tommy Wilk made nine saves for Stony Brook (10-6).

“I think we were nervous, without a doubt,” Gilardi said. “This was our first time here. Hopefully we can put ourselves in this position next year and then we can say ‘We’ve been here before.’”

Marist (12-4) will face Princeton, the top overall seed in the tournament, on Sunday.

Collin Patrick and Peter Murray each scored four goals for Marist. Stephen Cain (Shoreham-Wading River HS) added a goal on a backhanded shot off a faceoff in the third quarter for Marist. Defender Michael Cassano (MacArthur HS) had a key check for a takeaway to thwart a Stony Brook scoring opportunity late in the fourth quarter.

Stony Brook never led in the game and It took over 20 minutes of play for it to score its first goal, a man-up shot from Williamson that made it 2-1 with 9:25 left in the second quarter. Williamson’s unassisted goal midway through the third quarter cut Marist’s lead to 6-5, but that was as close as the Seawolves would get.
