Stony Brook women's basketball coach Beth O'Boyle resigns, will coach VCU

Stony Brook women's basketball coach Beth O'Boyle resigned Monday to take the same position at Virginia Commonwealth in the Atlantic 10, both schools announced. She will replace Marlene Stollings, who left for Minnesota.

O'Boyle, who will be introduced Tuesday in Richmond, guided the Seawolves to a 24-9 record in 2013-14, setting a program record for victories in Stony Brook's 15-year Division I era. The Seawolves also tied the 1986-87 Division III team for the most wins in school history.

Stony Brook went 13-3 in America East Conference play, its best mark since 2006-07 (14-2), and finished second in the regular-season standings, tying a program best. Stony Brook reached the America East Tournament championship game and earned its second WNIT bid. O'Boyle, who was unavailable for comment Monday, was 42-51 in three seasons.

"In a short period of time, coach O'Boyle helped the women's basketball program to achieve great things here at Stony Brook, and I want to sincerely thank her for her efforts and wish her well in her future endeavors," interim athletic director Donna Woodruff said in a statement. "Our Seawolves women's basketball program is truly on the rise, and we look forward to finding the right head coach who will ensure that we continue our upward momentum."

Woodruff said a national search will begin immediately.

O'Boyle came to Stony Brook after four years at Canisius, where she was the associate head coach in her final two seasons.
