Stony Brook fell 68-54 to visiting University of Maine in an American East matchup at the Island Federal Arena on Saturday.
“Credit to Maine,” Stony Brook head coach Caroline McCombs said in a news release. “We needed to do a better job of getting them to take tougher twos and not allowing them to get second chance opportunities. We quit scoring with them in the fourth quarter, but it’s not our offense, it’s our defense that needs to be better.”
Maine held an eight-point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Seawolves (14-4, 3-2 America East) were outscored by the Black Bears (12-7, 5-1) down the stretch, 12-6.
Three players finished with double figures in the scoring column for Stony Brook: Oksana Gouchie-Provencher scored 15 points, India Pagan added 14 and senior guard Shania Johnson had 10. Johnson has tallied at least 10 points in 17 of Stony Brook’s 18 games this season. As a team, Stony Brook had four steals compared to Maine’s three, as the Seawolves limited a Black Bears team that averaged 8.5 a game.
The Seawolves are now 14-4 overall and 3-2 in America East play.
