Alfred Lindberg scored the tiebreaking goal with 14 minutes left on a pass from Jose Alfaro as the Suffolk Community College men's soccer team beat Montgomery, 3-2, to advance to the NJCAA title game Sunday against top-ranked and host Herkimer.
Suffolk took a 2-1 lead with 18 minutes left on a goal by Lindberg off a cross from Franke Mitrani. Kevin Ferreira scored the first Suffolk goal to tie it at 1-1.
"That was an unbelievable semifinal,'' Suffolk coach Frank Vertullo said in a statement. "We had a specific game plan and we stuck to it. I am so proud of my boys for what they did tonight. No one gave us a chance because Montgomery scored 140 goals this season, but I told my boys, 'Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion.' We worked so hard and we did it. We are almost there.''
Suffolk defeated Herkimer for the title in 2010.
