Hofstra tops Stony Brook in hoops

In a game that may have served as more a measuring tool and sign for the future, Hofstra defeated Stony Brook, 72-60, at the Stony Brook Sports Complex. Hofstra improved to 4-0 in what would become one of the school's best seasons. It would go on to finish 26-5 under coach Jay Wright and win the America East title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra lost to UCLA, 61-48, in the NCAA Tourney and moved on to the Colonial Athletic Association the following season. Stony Brook was playing in its second season in Division I, competing as an independent. Under coach Nick Macarchuk, the team finished the season 17-11 and joined the America East the following season.
