UPDATED: Stony Brook's stunning start
Stony Brook's baptism into the world of BCS football got off to a very inauspicious start. The Seawolves had to call a timeout before running the first offensive play of the game. After going three-and-out, they punted, and South Florida took over at its own 41.
On the Bulls' first play from scrimmage, quarterback B.J. Daniels raised up and threw a quick pass to wide receiver Dontavia Bogan, who was one-on-one with Seawolves cornerback Al-Majid Hutchins on the right sideline. Bogan made one move and was gone up the right sideline for a 59-yard touchdown. The one-play drive lasted 10 seconds and gave the Bulls a 7-0 lead.
But the Seawolves quicly righted themselves. Rich Vitale recovered a fumbled punt at the Bulls' 35-yard line. Then quarterback Michael Coulter hit Jordan Gush with a 31-yard pass down the left sideline to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Ed Gowins to tie the game at 7. Amazing.
Then, the Seawolves got another break after stopping South Florida when Bulls punter Justin Brockhaus-Kann touched his knee down while fielding a low snap. SBU took over at the Bulls' 27-yard line, and Coulter had plenty of time to find Hofstra transfer Brock Jackolski open down the left sideline for a 27-yard touchdown that gave Stony Brook a shocking 14-7 lead with 5:30 left in the opening quarter.
The Bulls shook off those mistakes and responded with a 70-yard drive requiring eight plays to tie the game at 14 on Daniels' 4-yard run with 1:31 left in the quarter.
