Ventre's TD pass lifts USMMA past Gallaudet, 35-34
Derrick Ventre threw an 11-yard touchdown to Chaise Dunn with two seconds left to lift USMMA over Gallaudet, 35-34, in their football season opener at home Saturday.
Jimmy Gardner's 5-yard touchdown run had given Gallaudet a 34-28 lead with 1:10 left. Before Ventre's winning pass, the Mariners had a touchdown called back by a penalty with 12 seconds left. Ventre was 13-for-19 with 177 yards and two touchdowns and Karl Heimbrock ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns to lead USMMA (1-0).
C.W. Post 20, American International 11: Erik Anderwkavich threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 133 yards and a score to lead C.W. Post. It was the Pioneers' first season-opening win since 2006 and its first over American International since that season. Darnel Williams had seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Billy O'Connor made 12 tackles and Alex Mauro had five tackles and an interception to lead the defense.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Dowling sweeps. The Golden Lions beat Adelphi, 25-8, 25-23, 25-7, behind Monika Kasperek's 12 kills and Patrycja Klekotka's 10. Maja Potpara had 25 assists. Dowling (3-0) then defeated Stonehill, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23. Kasperek had 11 kills, Potpara 19 assists and Megan Futch 13 digs.
Queens splits. Suzanne Byrne had 16 kills in Queens' 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 24-26 loss to Southern Connecticut State. They rebounded with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-23 win over Georgian Court in which Ceren Kilic had 22 assists and Lisa Marie Papenthin had eight kills.
Pace 3, Adelphi 0: Susana Verdugo-Del Real had 10 kills to lead Pace (1-1). Emily Dorko had 11 kills for Adelphi (1-2).
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Southern Connecticut State 2, Queens 0: Suzane Pires scored at 21:35 to give Southern Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Queens is 0-2.
FIELD HOCKEY
Seton Hill 2, Adelphi 1: Janell Hofer scored in the 48th minute to give Seton Hill a 2-0 lead. Brittany Kinsley scored at 60:42 for Adelphi (0-1).
