Quarterback shuffle
Playing quarterback in the NFL these days has all the staying power of a Twitter post.
With coaches under increasing pressure to win now, quarterbacks have taken the fall like never before this early in the season.
The list goes like this:
In Buffalo, Ryan Fitzpatrick has replaced Trent Edwards after Edwards spent the entire offseason as the starter.
In Carolina, Matt Moore was considered the heir apparent to Jake Delhomme. But now he's out; rookie Jimmy Clausen is in.
In Oakland, the Raiders have already pulled the plug on Jason Campbell after dealing for him in the offseason. So hold off on those Jim Plunkett comparisons as Campbell takes a seat in favor of Bruce Gradkowski.
Vince Young was yanked last week by Titans coach Jeff Fisher, although he gets the start on Sunday against the Giants.
David Garrard spent some time on the bench in a blowout loss to the Chargers last week, but backup Josh McCown blew out a knee, so Garrard won't lose his job.
And, in perhaps the most notable change of all: Michael Vick is now the starter in Philadelphia over Kevin Kolb. This after head coach Andy Reid said repeatedly after trading away Donovan McNabb that Kolb was his clear-cut starter.
In a word, wow. Or, better yet, whoa.
The trade that almost was The Vikings had a deal worked out with Chargers holdout wide receiver Vincent Jackson for a one-year, $6 million contract, but a trade never came off. The Chargers were looking for second- and third-round picks, but Minnesota only went as a high as second-rounder and a conditional pick in 2011.
Because there was no deal for Jackson by Wednesday, he is now ineligible to play until the seventh week of the season. He has been suspended a total of six games (three for violating the league's personal conduct policy and another three for not reporting to the Chargers earlier this month.
Chances of a deal for Jackson at this point: probably somewhere between slim and none. He's now threatening to sit out the entire season.
Phillips on the hot seat?
There has been plenty of speculation about coach Wade Phillips' future in the wake of the Cowboys' 0-2 start. But owner Jerry Jones indicated this week he is not about to make a change - this despite the fact offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been mentioned as a possible successor. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher's name has also been mentioned.
Despite Jones' demanding style, he has shown reluctance to switch coaches. The last time he made an in-season coaching change: never.
It's not easy being a Browns fan
When the Browns came back to Cleveland as an expansion team, the city reveled in their return. Too bad the football hasn't matched the excitement.
The Browns have been downright miserable ever since. The Browns are 0-2 for the third year in a row, and the sixth time since '99. None of those teams finished better than 5-11.
Last week, Seneca Wallace became the 15th quarterback to start a game for Cleveland since the Browns' return. And he became the 14th to lose his first game.
Will the Bills' dubious streak live on?
If it's bad in Cleveland, it's almost as bad in Buffalo. The Bills have lost 13 straight games to the Patriots, whom they face on Sunday in Foxboro. The Bills have lost 18 of the last 19 to New England, including eight straight at Foxboro.
Buffalo can take sole possession of the longest current losing streak if they are beaten by New England. The Chargers have beaten the Raiders 13 straight times.
Some hope for the Lions?
Sure, it's early. But things are at least looking up for the Lions' top two draft selections this year. No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska has been terrific at defensive tackle with two sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits in the first two games. And Cal running back Jahvid Best has five touchdowns so far.
Now for the bad news: the Lions are off to an 0-2 start, and they're on the road Sunday in Minnesota to face Brett Favre's 0-2 Vikings. Favre is a perfect 18-0 in home games against the Lions - 14-0 at Lambeau Field, 3-0 at County Stadium in Milwaukee and 1-0 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
