Wake up Eagles, you're no Dream Team yet

As far as we can tell, the Eagles haven't made any major free-agent acquisition or pulled off a blockbuster trade in the last few minutes. But stick around. At the rate the Eagles have been going over the past week, they just might add another piece to what newly acquired quarterback Vince Young now calls the NFL's "Dream Team."
It has been an absolutely dizzying sequence of moves by the normally conservative Eagles, who have pounced on the post-lockout free agency/trading period like no other team in the league. They've come out the other side with such big-name players as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Young and defensive linemen Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin.
Oops, almost forgot. Former Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was added to the mix on Tuesday and showed up for work Wednesday.
That's four former first-round picks in Asomugha, Young, Brown and Rodgers-Cromartie and two big-time pass rushers in Jenkins and Babin. Throw in offensive lineman Evan Mathis and safety Jarrad Page, and you've got quite a collection of talent all gathered at the team's Lehigh University training camp.
"You can tell by some of the moves that they've made this offseason that they put winning first," Brown said Wednesday. "I sat back and thought about it and weighed all my options and I thought this would be a good fit for myself."
Why not? After the Dolphins declined to re-sign Brown, who has had injury problems in recent years but has been extremely productive when healthy, he now joins one highly intriguing collection of players. With the Eagles coming off the NFC East title by outlasting the Giants down the stretch, they have enhanced their roster to the point where they'll have to be included in the conversation for legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
They have solved their problem at cornerback by adding two terrific players in Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie -- possibly a precursor to a trade of cornerback Asante Samuel. They've added a quality backup for tailback LeSean McCoy. They replace Kevin Kolb as Michael Vick's backup with Young. And they beef up the pass rush with Jenkins and Babin, both of whom come off their best single-season sack production.
Dream Team?
Sure looks that way. Then again, the Eagles hope the final outcome is different from the Miami Heat's Dream Team. You know how that one turned out.
So I'm not buying into the Eagles' hype just yet. For one thing, Vick, despite his impressive comeback after serving a prison sentence for running an illegal dogfighting operation, still has to prove he's a championship-caliber quarterback.
The offensive line was leaky last year, forcing Vick to run more than he wanted to. And the Eagles are thin at defensive tackle, a problem that was magnified by Wedneday's scary incident in which Mike Patterson suffered a seizure and was taken to an area hospital.
The Eagles signed veteran defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove Wednesday night, but linebacker continues to be an area of concern.
Someone else also needs proof that these players can come together as a team and be cohesive enough to compete for a championship. That someone just happens to run the show.
"You can have all the great players you want, but if they don't play as a football team, then there's a problem," coach Andy Reid said.
Reid nailed it. He knows the NFL is littered with examples of teams that stockpile big-name players, only to fizzle during the season.
But the Eagles are different in this respect: The players they've signed are high-quality performers with a good track record, and Reid has the kind of disciplined style necessary to bring this group together.
Enough to give Philly its first Super Bowl title? Too soon to know.
But not too soon to dream.
Philadelphia’s major acquisitions:
Nnamdi Asomugha, CB. The Raiders’ free agent is considered one of the league’s best cover corners.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB. Acquired in a trade with the Cardinals, a physical corner who will work well in the Eagles’ new bump-and-run scheme.
Jason Babin, DE. Career-high 12½ sacks with the Titans in 2010.
Cullen Jenkins, DE/DT. Helped Packers to the Super Bowl title in 2010 when he had a career-high seven sacks.
Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins. Former first-round pick starred in Miami’s “wildcat” offense.
Vince Young, QB. Former Titans first-round pick was released last week and quickly signed as Michael Vick’s backup.
Anthony Hargrove, DT. Played on the Saints’ Super Bowl winning team in 2009 when he had 42 tackles and five sacks.
