A 16-team playoff system in the NFL? Commissioner Roger Goodell said it’s a possibility that is now being discussed by the league’s competition committee.

Goodell told reporters at a press briefing today at the owners’ meeting in Dallas that the issue was something that will continue to be talked about in the coming months.

The playoffs are currently at 12 teams, and Goodell said adding two or four teams was a possibility.

If the playoffs were expanded to 16 games, bye weeks would be eliminated, meaning that the top two seeds in each conference – all of whom have a first-round bye – would have to play in the opening round.
