Broncos can't overcome Peyton's 3 interceptions
Matt Ryan threw his 100th touchdown pass and Roddy White had 102 yards receiving as the Falcons defeated the Broncos and error-prone Peyton Manning, 27-21, Monday night in Atlanta.
The Falcons (2-0) capitalized on three interceptions thrown by Manning in the first quarter and raced to a 20-0 lead. Manning rallied Denver (1-1) with two fourth-quarter scoring drives, but it wasn't enough to make up for his awful start.
"Each turnover has its own story that no one really wants to hear," he said. "I've just got to take care of the ball better."
The only other time he's been intercepted three times in the opening quarter was with the Colts in 2007 at San Diego.
Ryan was much more efficient, completing 24 of 36 passes for 219 yards. He hooked up with Tony Gonzalez for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then went to White for a 4-yard score in the third period. "He's an excellent player. He played well," Manning said. "I think he's going to have a great season and a long and great career."
Redskins lose Orakpo, Carriker
The early glow from rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III's fast start faded for the Redskins when defensive starters Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker were declared out for the season. Linebacker Orakpo tore the pectoral muscle near his left shoulder and defensive end Carriker tore the quadriceps tendon in his right knee in a 31-28 loss to the Rams.
Belichick mum on hurt Hernandez
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he doesn't know how long tight end Aaron Hernandez will be sidelined with a right ankle injury. ESPN.com reported that Hernandez will not play Sunday night against the Ravens and probably won't return until October at the earliest.
Around the league
Eagles center Jason Kelce will miss four to six weeks because of a torn right medial collateral ligament. He also partially tore his anterior cruciate ligament, and a test Tuesday will determine whether Kelce needs ACL reconstructive surgery. If so, he will miss the rest of the season . . . Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said quarterback Blaine Gabbert (glute) is expected to play Sunday.
