Broncos rookie arrested on sex charge
Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Perrish Cox has been arrested for investigation of felony sexual assault.
Cox was taken into custody Thursday night following an investigation into an alleged Oct. 28 assault and he was arraigned Friday. A judge said that Cox can leave the state two times - to play in Broncos road games at Arizona Sunday and at Oakland on Dec. 19. Cox posted bail.
The case filing was sealed. Cox's next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7. The Broncos have not addressed whether Cox will play Sunday.
The alleged assault occurred a few days after Cox was knocked out of a game against Oakland on Oct. 24 with a concussion. He spoke afterward about having no memory of the 59-14 rout and missed the team's trip to London for their Oct. 31 game against San Francisco.
Cox's arrest is just the latest crisis for the Broncos.
Broncos interim coach Eric Studesville was promoted from running backs coach late Monday after Josh McDaniels was fired in the midst of the franchise's worst skid in four decades and the Spygate II videotape scandal that tarnished the team's image.
Wide receiver Kenny McKinley committed suicide in September. Star linebacker D.J. Williams also was stripped of his captaincy earlier this season following his second arrest on drunken driving charges.
Pats LB suspended
Patriots rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes, the team's second-leading tackler, was suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The NFL also suspended Panthers OG Duke Robinson four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Eagles DE fined
Eagles DE Trent Cole has been fined $20,000 for hitting Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the knee area Dec, 2. Also fined were Cardinals DT Alan Branch ($10,000) for roughing Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford and Lions DE Cliff Avril ($15,000) for roughing Chicago's Jay Cutler.
Cassel doubtful
Kansas City QB Matt Cassel, who had an emergency appendectomy two days ago, will be listed as doubtful for this weekend's AFC West showdown game at San Diego. Coach Todd Haley refused to say if Cassel would be out for Sunday's game. The Chiefs (8-4) lead the Chargers by two games in the division . . . Eagles CB Asante Samuel left practice Friday with his sore knee, and is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game at Dallas (4-8).
