Cardinal GM Steve Keim's proudest move

Since taking over in January as Cardinals general manager, Steve Keim has made a whopping 191 transactions on Arizona’s roster. That includes high-profile deals such as the trade for quarterback Carson Palmer, the drafting of former LSU star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and signing pass rusher John Abraham.

But ask Keim about the one unheralded signing he’s most proud of: Paul Fanaika.

"He’s an Arizona State kid who was going to fire school," Keim said of the 27-year-old guard. "Signed him off the street, figuring maybe he gets you through training camp. Next thing you know, he’s starting at right guard."

Fanaika was out of football last year after being released by the Seahawks after the 2011 season. He played two games for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League before the league folded last year, and he decided to participate in a ride-along program with a Glendale, Ariz., fire station. He also took emergency medical technician classes.

The career change will have to wait, though. Fanaika, a seventh-round pick by the Eagles in 2009 who never had started an NFL game until this season, will be starting his 15th straight game for the Cardinals when they visit the Seahawks today.
