We've seen a trickle of critical comments from some unnamed Jets' players in the aftermath of Braylon Edwards' early-morning DUI arrest, but at least one teammate publicly expressed support for the wide receiver.
In an appearance on SNY's "Jets Extra Point," cornerback Antonio Cromartie said he stands by Edwards.
"As a teammate, we're going to be here for Braylon, no matter what goes on with him," Cromartie said. "We want to give him support. We're brothers. We all stick together."
Cromartie has had his own share of personal issues, mostly related to child support issues. He has eight children with six different women.
"We have our own personal lives and things go on in our personal lives," he said. "We're football players, but at the same time, we have personal lives."
It's uncertain whether Edwards will play in Sunday night's game against the Dolphins, although the NFL's collective bargaining stipulates that a player cannot be suspended for a first DUI . It's possible the Jets can de-activate him, but even that might involve a battle with the NFL Players Association. If Edwards doesn't play, Cromartie said it wouldn't put any more pressure on the team's defense or the offense.
"Not at all," he said. "We're going to continue to do the things we need to do and improve in practice. We're a smashmouth football team. We're going to run it down your throat."
