Drew Brees’ contract has expired and he’ll be eligible to hit the free-agent market this month. But teams needing help at quarterback shouldn’t hold their breath on going after the Saints’ star passer.
Brees himself has said he wants to remain in New Orleans, and Saints coach Sean Payton expects that will be the case in the not-too-distant future.
“I think that’s going to get done fairly smoothly,” Payton told Saints reporters Thursday at the Scouting Combine. “I don’t see that being a long, drawn-out process, and I think we’ve been here before.”
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is scheduled to meet this week with Brees’ agent, Tom Condon, to work out contract terms. The Saints are hoping to complete negotiations before the start of free agency on March 14.
“There’s no assumptions, but I’m fairly confident [of a deal getting done],” Payton said. “It’s not something I’ve been focused on a lot.”
