Eagles cut Jason Babin

The 3-8 Eagles are going nowhere fast, and now they're already re-shaping their roster in advance of next season. In a stunning move, the team released defensive end Jason Babin. 

Babin signed a five-year, $28 million free agent deal last year, and more than $16 million from that deal was due in the next three seasons. Babin had 18 sacks last season, but has underperformed so far, getting just 5 1/2 sacks.

“We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years. We wish him all the best as he continues his career,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of younger guys in the defensive line rotation.”

The move should give second-round lineman Vinny Curry some more playing time over the last five games. 

Babin, meanwhile, could be picked up on waivers by a team in need of a solid pass rusher.
