Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson suffered a seizure that lasted approximately four minutes Wednesday during a training camp practice. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, and head trainer Rick Burkholder said Patterson was doing well after receiving medical treatment.
Burkholder said Patterson did not have a history of seizures, and he declined to speculate on the cause. Patterson, 27, was undergoing tests to determine why the seizure occurred. The 6-1, 300-pound tackle lost consciousness during the seizure, according to Burkholder, but was alert and stable after beating treated by the Eagles' medical staff.
"He's absolutely alert, stable, totally communicating with everybody, to the point where he's joking a little bit," Burkholder said. "We won't speculate what happened to him other than he had a seizure. They'll do all the testing at Lehigh Valley Hospital to determine why he had the seizure."
Defensive tackle Antonio Dixon said Patterson texted some teammates to say that he was OK.
"He called to say he was doing well," Dixon said. "He was alert and said to the d-line don't worry about him he's doing good."
Patterson went down shortly before the defensive linemen were doing 1-on-1 drills against the offensive linemen. Coach Andy Reid was nearby and immediately summoned the team's training staff. Patterson was motionless for several moments after he went into convulsions. Eagles rookie guard Danny Watkins, a former firefighter, assisted the training staff.
Patterson was the Eagles' first-round pick out of USC in 2005.
