Brian Burns had 16.5 sacks, one of the best seasons by a Giants linebacker this century, and received a Pro Bowl nod . . . but it was not enough to earn him a spot on the AP All-Pro first team.
Burns was named a second-teamer, the only Giant or Jet who received recognition when the awards were announced on Saturday morning.
Myles Garrett, who set an NFL single-season record with 23 sacks for the Browns, was named a first-team edge rusher along with the Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. and the Packers’ Micah Parsons.
This was the first All-Pro recognition of any kind for Burns. In his seventh NFL season and second with the Giants, he set career highs in sacks, quarterback hits (31), tackles for loss (22) and forced fumbles (tied with three) and started all 17 games for the second consecutive season. Burns’ 16.5 sacks are tied with Jason Pierre-Paul (2011) for fourth in a single season by a Giant. His 31 quarterback hits are the most by any Giant since the statistic started being tracked in 2006.
Garrett, the Rams’ Puka Nacua and the Seahawks’ Jaxon Smith-Njigba were unanimous choices.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford beat out the Patriots’ Drake Maye. Stafford, 37, received 31 first-place votes to Maye’s 18 to earn All-Pro honors for the first time in his 17-year career. Josh Allen of the Bills got the other vote.
The Broncos, the AFC’s No. 1 seed, had four first-team players and two second-teamers. Eighteen players are first-timers, including five on special teams.
