Add a third team to the Perry Fewell hunt.

The 49ers have requested permission from the Giants to interview the defensive coordinator for their vacant head coaching job, according to a league source. The Browns and Panthers had already done so Monday, and Tuesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the Giants had given the Browns permission. No interview date has been announced for any interviews.

Fewell, who has experience as the interim head coach of the Bills in 2009, is an attractive candidate coming off a season in which the Giants did not make the playoffs but had a top 10 defense and led the league in turnovers.

He's also a minority candidate who could help teams fulfill their obligations under the Rooney Rule. That does not appear to be the impetus for the 49ers' interest, however, since they are also reportedly interviewing Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.

Rolle: Effort lacking

Speaking in his last weekly WFAN segment of the season, safety Antrel Rolle said he couldn't say whether the loss to the Eagles in Week 15 lingered into the loss in Green Bay the following week.

"I know it took a lot out of me," he said. But he was critical of the effort against the Packers in a game the Giants needed to win to get into the playoffs. "I felt like we went out there and we played against Green Bay, but it wasn't our best game. The effort wasn't all the way there. Let's just be honest about it. I think the players realize that, the coaches realize that, I know the people at home watching, the fans, I know they realize that."

Plaxico coming back?

Asked if the Giants would consider bringing wide receiver Plaxico Burress back after he is released from prison in June, general manager Jerry Reese gave the same ambiguous answer he gave at the beginning of the season: "We investigate everything."
