I spent another day out at Florham Park, filling our Jets blog with plenty of material and catching up with some old friends (and some new ones since there were three Giants beat writers in attendance). It was also an opportunity for me to ask some questions of these Jets that they were clearly not expecting.

They knew what to say about their team, about the Chargers, about the Super Bowl and other things related to the Jets. They weren’t as prepared for questions about the Bills and the Giants.

But that's me, all about the unexpected.

In particular, I wanted to ask some of the offensive veterans for their impressions of Perry Fewell’s defense over the last four years in Buffalo. They play against it twice a year, what do they think?

“I’d say it’s a good move,” said quarterback Kellen Clemens, who came into the AFC East the same year Fewell was hired by the Bills.

“I think it was a good hire,” said Jerricho Cotchery, a veteran of six NFL seasons in the division.

Clemens said there are a lot of personnel similarities between the Bills and the Giants.

“Buffalo’s strength of their defense is their defensive ends,” Clemens said. “Aaron Schobel, Chris Kelsey, those guys. Obviously the Giants have some pretty good pass rushers up front. They run a similar four-down scheme. I’d say it’s a good move from a personnel standpoint.”

And how did the Bills run their secondary?

“Typically Buffalo had one very good, talented corner that they could leave on an island,” Clemens said. “You get some Tampa. It’s more zone and then they were man on thirds.”

As far as blitzing, Clemens said the Bills were not very creative, but they were smart.

“Our defense does some crazy stuff that nobody else sees,” he said of the Rex Ryan fingerprint. “Buffalo is more standard, but he made the most out of the strengths that he had from a personnel standpoint. Obviously the Giants, with their personnel on defense, I think it’s a good fit.”

And how about the intangibles?

“They get after the passer and they make plays period,” Cotchery said. “That’s what you get from them.”

“They’ve been struggling on offense for quite a bit of time now and their defense has been carrying them,” Cotchery also said. “I think he definitely has something about him that gets his guys to play lights-out for him. That’s what it’s all about.”
