Will Beatty was so concerned about the muscle spasms in his back that he wasn;t paying much attention to his vision. Whenever he looked down or at his nose, he said, things got a little fuzzy in his right eye. So with a day off from practice on Wednesday, he decided to have it checked out.

Good thing.

Beatty has a detached retina and will require surgery on Thursday morning. He won’t know how long he’ll be sidelined by the condition until after the procedure.

“The doctor doesn’t really know exactly how the surgery is going to go until he gets me in the operating room and actually dilates it and he can truly see what’s going on,” Beatty said on Wednesday. “I’ll know a lot more tomorrow how serious it is and time off and things like that.”

Beatty said he doesn’t remember getting poked or injuring his eye in any way during the Eagles game on Sunday night.

“I was dealing with some muscle spasms, so that was more my concern,” he said. “I wasn’t really worried about my eye. I just asked for a checkup because we had the day off and then all this happens and I was like ‘Wow.’”

Beatty will certainly be out for Monday night’s game against the Saints. The Giants have several options to replace him. They could either drop Stacy Andrews into the starting left tackle spot or slide former tackle David Diehl from guard to tackle and put Kevin Boothe at guard.

The Giants’ offensive line played one of its worst games in recent history on Sunday, something Tom Coughlin was critical of but also rationalized a bit by saying that there “were some issues that we were dealing with that I hope that the players can return to full strength.” He was talking about Beatty’s back and the food poisoning of Chris Snee. At the time, he was unaware of Beatty’s eye diagnosis and said he hoped to have Beatty back at full strength for the Saints.

This is Beatty's first year starting at left tackle and he has had a steady season.

“I’m hoping for the best,” Beatty said. “It could be a wide range of being out for a few weeks to being out for the season. I’m going for the lesser. But there’s nothing I can really do to rehab or anything so I’m just praying that when he goes (in) it’s not that bad.”
