Coaches just play the players they are dealt

While Robert Nunn was hoping to have Mathias Kiwanuka back this season, special teams coordinator Tom Quinn was saying that he will stick with Darius Reynaud as the kickoff and punt returner.

Just goes to show how little influence the coaches really have in personnel decisions.

While the Giants put Kiwanuka on season-ending IR, they signed former Packers return man Will Blackmon to their roster. Blackmon was on IR at the start of the season with the Packers but received an injury settlement that made him a free agent. The Giants had him in for a workout on Wednesday and signed him. He even Tweeted a picture of his new Giants helmet with the number 30 on it.

Blackmon, when healthy and caught up, will likely replace the disappointing Reynaud, even though Quinn said that Reynaud would be his man.

“We’re sticking with everyone,” Quinn said yesterday. “Hopefully at this point we’ve got some continuity with who’s out there, who’s playing the positions, the returns we’re running. Hopefully that will lead to more success for us.”

Quinn was asked about replacing Reynaud with guys who are already on the team like D.J. ware on kickoffs or Aaron Ross on punts.

“You like to stick with one guy and get him going,” Quinn said. “We thought we had it going the week before. If we can block it better, then we can see the true him. Last week (against Detroit) was the first time we really saw what I had seen in Minnesota as far as real good elusiveness, working north and south.”

Seems like it could be mostly south now.
