Coughlin compliments but doesn't commit to Bomar

Tom Coughlin has had nothing but praise for Rhett Bomar since the game ended last night. But when asked if the second-year quarterback has done enough to be the team’s backup behind Eli Manning, Coughlin wouldn’t commit.
“I think you’re always available to look at any options that are out there,” Coughlin said, “but there isn’t any question that Rhett has improved. He has more confidence, more poise, he’s running the huddle better. He’s had a couple of back-to-back weeks with two-minute experiences that he’s handled very well. There’s progress, there isn’t any doubt about it. If he can eliminate the interceptions then I’d be even more happy.”
Realistically it sounds as if the Giants will in fact go into the regular season with Bomar as the backup. It may be asking too much of a veteran to come in at this point and try to learn the Giants’ offense at a time when the rest of the team is focusing on week-to-week gameplans. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants did add a third quarterback at some point either late Saturday or Sunday when other teams trim their cuts. So whether or not Bomar remains the No. 2 for the entire season may be a better question than whether of not he has that role in Week 1.

Just as a side note, the Giants seem confident with Bomar.
“He works hard, and he comes to work every day putting in the time and effort, and he’s smart,” Hakeem Nicks said. “I think he’s going to be fine … As a receiver, our job is to catch the ball no matter who is delivering it. If the ball gets there, it’s our job to catch it. I don’t have a doubt that Rhett would be able to do it.”
