The last guy to wear the number 34 jersey here was Laron Scott, a 5-9, 184 pound cornerback who was with the Giants in training camp. Today, a 6-4, 265 pounder was wearing it.

Brandon Jacobs participated in his first practice with the Giants since the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVI, and his first since re-signing with the team on Tuesday. The running back was wearing a different number than his old 27 (that belongs to Stevie Brown for now) and while it would have looked strange to see him in any other number than 27 it did seem that the 34 jersey was stretched to its limits across his chest. It wasn’t Laron Scott’s old jersey – the defense wears blue and Jacobs and the offense were in white – but it fit Jacobs as if it could have been.

Anyway, yeah, Jacobs is back. And it sounds like he’ll be playing on Sunday.

“I think he’s in pretty good shape,” Tom Coughlin said. “We worked him out. He’s looked forward to the opportunity that would come, whether it would be here or someplace else. And I think he’s going to go practice and we’re going to try to deal with him just like we would any player right now because, quite frankly, we need him to get ready to play. He wouldn’t be here if that wasn’t the case.”

Coughlin also pushed aside the idea that Jacobs was some kind of Crash Davis character brought in to nurse a young player with a flaw in his game.

“He’s here to contribute to our team,” Coughlin said. “What David Wilson can learn from Brandon, fine. And Brandon will do a good job in that regard. But that’s not the primary reason he’s here.”
