Could the end be coming for Coughlin?

GREEN BAY, Wis. - In Weeks 16 and 17 of this season and last, the Giants have been outscored 130-33. That includes the infamous slide that sent John Mara into a tizzy at the end of 2009.

Who knows what will happen if the Giants fail to make the playoffs this year? Or worse yet, if they wind up losing to the Redskins on Sunday?

The thought of repercussions already is on some minds in the Giants' locker room. Asked if the heat under Tom Coughlin's seat is warranted, Barry Cofield did not defuse the question.

"That's just the game," Cofield said. "Guys get cut all the time and coaches get fired. It's a 'what have you done for me lately' type of business, and there will be changes made. There will be changes made in the personnel."

Cofield went so far as to say that the Giants are "not a fundamentally sound" team right now. That he put on the players' shoulders.

"The mistakes that we made and the way that we tackled, we're not fundamentally sound," Cofield said. "We've been coached to do everything, we've been taught the right way to do everything. We just haven't been doing it."

The Giants still have a chance to make the playoffs, but they'll need some help. And of course, they must beat the Redskins. That would give them 10 wins on the season, an accomplishment that Coughlin seemed to be holding out to the players as something to play for in its own right.

But that might not be enough to save his job. Especially if the team skids into a second straight offseason in another out-of-control spin.
