Titans' Derrick Henry stomps through Giants for 170 yards, two TDs

Derrick Henry ran for a franchise-record 238 yards and four touchdowns against Jacksonville in Tennessee’s previous game.

The raw, damp weather Sunday at MetLife Stadium made it a natural day for more life on the run, so  the Giants knew a 6-3, 247-pound train was coming. But they still got run over.

The Titans had Henry carry the ball 33 times, and he ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns in their 17-0 win.

“When I got done with pregame, I knew it was going to be a long game,” Henry said after picking up the most rushing yards by a Giants opponent since 2009.

“The rain was coming down. It was windy. But we were going to run it, and I had to go out there and make something happen.”

The Giants blamed themselves.

“We just didn’t tackle well,” linebacker Alec Ogletree said. “I mean, they were going to try to run the ball and they ran the ball, and we just didn’t come up to make enough tackles and swarm the ball like we needed to.”

So Henry ran off with a franchise record. The 2015 Heisman winner’s 408 yards on the ground in back-to-back games beat Hall of Famer Earl Campbell’s 405 with the Houston Oilers.

“Earl Campbell, that’s a beast, man,” Henry said. “ . . . For me to be mentioned with his name, that’s like a dream come true.”

The Giants’ nightmare featured Henry scoring twice from the 1. The Alabama alum’s long run went for 22. He had a 99-yard run against Jacksonville 10 days earlier.

“I think he’s one of those guys that once he gets going and can get kind of in some space, he’s a lot faster than people think,” defensive lineman Josh Mauro said. “He’s hard to take down, especially for the guys in the secondary.”

Tennessee (8-6) ran for 215 yards overall — the most against the Giants since 2015.

“Henry is a heck of a player. Definitely respect his game,” Saquon Barkley said.

“Tennessee, they were able to establish the run, something that we weren’t able to do today.”
