Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie may be a part-time player for a while.

The Giants' best cornerback rotated in and out of Sunday's game against the Falcons while nursing a leg injury. Rodgers-Cromartie called it an ankle injury on Sunday night, but Tom Coughlin said it may be more than just a simple sprain.

"It's a leg injury but pin-pointing it is not something that I'm going to try to do," Coughlin said on Monday. "It starts with an ankle but I have noticed that he has had some issues way up high in the hip area also from time to time. I'm just going to stick with the leg for right now."

Last Thursday, Rodgers-Cromartie missed several snaps in the Washington game with what the Giants then called a thigh injury.

Rodgers-Cromartie underwent tests at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Monday afternoon.

"He thinks he can play with it," Coughlin said. "We felt that he could work through it on a couple of occasions. Ronnie [Barnes, vice president of medical services for the Giants] wanted to shut it down and take a look at whatever was going on there. Hopefully we can overcome it. He thinks he can play through it as he rehabs it and feels better about it."

If he can't, the Giants will likely go with the system they used on Sunday where Rodgers-Cromartie plays when he can and sits when he can't. Zack Bowman played for him on those snaps when he was sidelined. The Giants also are expected to add Jayron Hosley to their cornerback depth as he returns from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

"I would rather it be that he plays and stays out there," Coughlin said of Rodgers-Cromartie. "Unfortunately he's felt a need to come out the last couple of football games. Guys are ready to go on the field and they've done a good job when he's come out. If that's what we have to play with and have to work with within the system, then we have to do that."

Giant steps

Coughlin said Odell Beckham Jr. came out of his first NFL game without any further damage to the hamstring injury that sidelined him until Sunday. "He seemed to be very fine today, there wasn't any issue," Coughlin said. "We will push him along even further now." . . . Guard Geoff Schwartz (toe) is eligible to practice next Monday and can play in the Nov. 3 game against the Colts when he comes off injured reserve with a designation to return . . . The Giants waived receiver Julian Talley. They released Trindon Holliday (hamstring) from injured reserve, allowing the veteran kickoff returner to sign with another team.
