Rich Ohrnberger had one of the best careers any linemen ever had as a high schooler on Long Island. Playing for East Meado,w he was a two-time All-Long Island first-teamer who won both the Thorp and Martone awards his senior year, trophies given to the best overall player and lineman in Nassau County. He went on to play at Penn State and was drafted by the Patriots in 2009, but his professional career hasn’t quite measured up to those high school days.
Now he’s looking for a fresh start. With the Giants.
Ohrnberger announced on Twitter on Thursday that he is attending the Giants’ rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis. The Giants confirmed that. If things go well for him he’ll be signed after several days of workouts and added to the 90-man roster and invited to the veterans minicamp in June and training camp in July.
Ohrnberger played five games for the Patriots while spending time between their practice squad and 53-man roster in the past three seasons. He did not play in any games last season.
Perhaps the Patriots held against him the name of his high school team: The Jets.
