Former Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers interviewed with the Giants on Thursday for a senior position on the coaching staff that would be created for him, a source told Newsday. NFL Network was the first to report the interview.

The Giants do not have any openings on their coaching staff and are not expected to create any vacancies. If Rodgers did join the Giants, it likely would lead to a shuffling of the staff’s responsibilities.

Rodgers, who has worked with defensive linemen for most of his NFL coaching career, could be tapped as, say, a run-defense coach who works with the linemen and linebackers together. He also might be asked to help improve the Giants’ pass rush.

Rodgers was the defensive line coach in Miami when Giants linebacker Olivier Vernon began his career there and flourished. Vernon had 18 sacks in his last two seasons working with Rodgers.

Rodgers also is said to be mulling an offer to join former Jets coach Todd Bowles with the Bucs as their defensive line coach. Bowles was hired as the Bucs’ defensive coordinator earlier this week.
