The Giants have had so many injuries this season that when they learned that starting center David Baas would be unable to play about two hours before Sunday's kickoff, there was little they could do but find some gallows humor in the situation.

"Before the game, you hear the news, and talking with [guard Chris] Snee and some of the guys, all you can do is really laugh and say, 'Hey, what are you going to do?' " Eli Manning said. "It's too late. We can't start crying or complaining. Midstream adjust."

That adjustment meant that Kevin Boothe slid from left guard to center, where he had played before, and Mitch Petrus, who came to the stadium Sunday pretty sure he would not even be in uniform for the game, started at guard.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Baas, who complained of headaches, was having tests done Monday to find the root of the problem.

"We do have an idea and we are going in that direction, but I wouldn't want to say anything until it is proven," Coughlin said. "Hopefully it can be gotten under control."

Coughlin also said Stacy Andrews, who suffered pulmonary embolisms in both lungs Saturday night, will not play again this season.

Giant steps

Safety Kenny Phillips had an MRI and is expected to miss a few weeks with a sprained left knee . . . Coughlin said DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle) is day-to-day but probably won't be available this week . . . DE Dave Tollefson suffered a left knee "contusion with swelling" . . . Coughlin said LB Michael Boley (hamstring) and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) were "sore" after their first games back from injury. "Bradshaw is telling me it's not as bad," Coughlin said.
