Tom Coughlin won’t be the head coach of the Eagles, which is something the Giants’ owners are very pleased about.

“I’m not going to lie; it would have been like watching Bill Parcells walk out on the field with a star on his shirt,” John Mara said of the years when Parcells coached the Cowboys. “That was tough to see at the time and that would have bothered me.”

Co-owner Steve Tisch said it would have been hard to see Coughlin in green. “I see Tom in blue and red,” he said.

Tisch spoke about the decision to allow Coughlin to resign and suggested — as many have speculated — that the coach was nudged in that direction.

“I felt it was time for the next chapter in New York Giants head coaching,” Tisch said. “Three or four disappointing seasons were a factor . . . I like change when change is organic and not arbitrary. I felt it was time for the next chapter.”

That feeling nearly pushed Coughlin to a division rival. Ultimately, he withdrew from consideration for the Eagles’ job. With only one open job remaining in the NFL — the 3-13 Titans — it does not appear Coughlin will coach anywhere in the 2016 season.

Mara said the offer to Coughlin to continue working for the Giants in some advisory capacity still stands. He also said he would not have stood in the way of Coughlin’s taking another job.

Even that job.

“I want him to be happy,” Mara said, “but I certainly didn’t want to see him happy in green.”
