Osi Umenyiora wasn’t on hand to pick up his own Super Bowl ring this week, but he might be in the market for someone else’s.
The Giants defensive end announced on Twitter this morning that if he reaches one million followers on the social media site he will buy Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl XXV ring and return it to the Giants legend. Taylor’s ring, which he had given to his son, is being auctioned off. The auction ends tonight.
“L.T. is a football LEGEND!,” Umenyiora posted. “If 1,000,000 people support him getting his ring back, then its worth it to me to buy it and give it back to him”
Umenyiora also said that he would allow one of the million followers, chosen at random, to present Taylor with the ring.
Of course, it doesn’t sound like Taylor even cares. He’d given the ring to his son years ago and wasn’t aware that it was being auctioned off. He’s reportedly fine with the memento from the 1990 championship team being given to the highest bidder.
As for Umenyiora, as of 9:30 on Saturday – about 12 hours before the auction closes – he’s at 24,353 followers. That’s only 975,647 short of his goal. But he’s already jumped around 5,000 followers since posting his challenge earlier this morning. Bidding for the ring held steady at $98,525 overnight.
Umenyiora isn’t the only one to jump into the followers-for-rings dynamic. Former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has said he’ too, will but LT’s ring if he reaches one million followers. He’s got a much larger hill to climb. He’s got only 2,242 followers, or 997,758 shy.
“I am in with u on this, I have get my followers up to,” Jacobs Tweeted to Umenyiora.
Umenyiora apparently thought that was funny.
“You always trying to Race somebody Jacobs,” he responded. “Dont forget what happened last time we raced!!”
If it had anything to do with a police escort, I don’t want to know about it.
