Giants coach Brian Daboll 'hopeful' Kadarius Toney will be ready for opener

Kadarius Toney’s streak of missing preseason games because of injury remains unbroken, but Brian Daboll is “hopeful” that the wide receiver will be ready for the Week 1 game in Tennessee.
“We’ll just take it one day at a time,” Daboll said Monday. “He’s been getting better. I think he’s getting close, so I’m hopeful.”
Toney’s absence from team drills for most of the past three weeks of camp because of what appears to be a leg injury creates just one of the uncertainties surrounding the wide receiver position as the regular season looms.
Sterling Shepard just returned from PUP last week and has had very little work, Kenny Golladay has yet to demonstrate a connection with Daniel Jones, and Darius Slayton may be playing elsewhere, either via trade or if he is waived and claimed by another team, all while the second-tier players at the position have had strong summers and have at times outperformed those above them on the depth chart.
If you are looking for drama on cutdown day, the Giants’ wide receiver room would be a good place to start.
“I think it’s a competitive spot,” Daboll said of the position group. “I know we’d like all of them to be out there, but due to circumstances, they couldn’t. But I think those guys have picked up our system well. I think there’s different skill sets in that unit. I think they’re smart and I’m excited to work with them.”
Whoever is left, at least, when the regular season prep begins next week.
Notes & quotes: Daboll said QB Tyrod Taylor is “sore” from the hit he took in the first quarter of Sunday’s game and might not practice much this week but should be OK. “I think it’ll take a few days here,” Daboll said . . . K Graham Gano has yet to clear the concussion protocol, but the Giants were confident enough in him trending toward a return that they waived K Ryan Santoso. Santoso kicked field goals of 36 and 49 yards with two extra points and touchbacks on five of six kickoffs against the Jets . . . The Giants waived OL Josh Rivas, S Yusuf Corker, WR Keelan Doss, WR Travis Toivonen, CB Olaijah Griffin and OL Eric Smith.
