Kadarius Toney says he continues to improve from nagging injuries to both hamstrings that have sidetracked his season, even if there is no firm return date in sight.
“Right now, I’m just focusing on getting better day by day,” the second-year receiver said after practice Thursday during an at-times tense session with reporters. “I’m not an information-giver.”
Toney, a first-round draft pick in 2021, had 39 receptions for 420 yards and no touchdowns in last year’s injury-shortened season.
He returned from a training camp hamstring injury to record two receptions for zero yards in this season’s first two games, then tweaked his other hamstring in Week 2, then tweaked the first hamstring again in practice before the Oct. 9 game against the Packers.
Toney has not practiced this week and is not expected to play against the Jaguars on Sunday.
Asked about his ongoing hamstring problems, he said, “When you go hard, stuff happens. I don’t know what else to tell you . . . If you ask anybody — the best doctor or whatever — hamstrings are very tricky.”
Toney agreed that he probably tried to return from previous injuries too soon but said he is confident he will get it right this time.
“I’ve got my trust in the trainers and coaches that they’re going to do the best for me so that I’m out there in my peak performance,” he said.
Toney said he doesn’t pay attention to critics among fans — some of whom he has responded to on social media.
“I really don’t care,” he said. “I’ve been going against the odds all my life. Why would it be different now?”
Asked about his confidence level, he said, “Everybody lets one downfall or one mishap or one thing go wrong determine the outcome of how they feel. I really don’t care for that.”
Notes & quotes: RB Saquon Barkley, who has been bothered by a sore shoulder, called the injury “annoying” but said he will continue to play through it. He has been limited in practice . . . WR Kenny Golladay (knee) and LB Oshane Ximines (quadriceps) did not practice . . . The Giants did not practice in full pads this week, following a recent pattern. Coach Brian Daboll cited the current stretch of three road trips in four weeks. “We’ve taken a little bit off on that in terms of the contact,” he said.
