Coach Brian Daboll confirmed that the Giants have signed free agent safety Landon Collins, once one their biggest stars, to the practice squad, news first reported on Thursday by CBS Sports.
Daboll said before practice that he attended Collins’ recent workout for the team and “he happened to be a guy who had a good workout.”
The coach noted the fluidity of the practice squad roster but said the team would “get [Collins] in, let him learn our system and see how it goes.”
Collins, 28, was a Giants safety from 2015-18 and a Pro Bowler in the last three of those seasons. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2016. Few players are left from his time with the team.
He spent 2019-21 with Washington, missing much of the ’20 season because of a torn Achilles tendon. Last season he was moved into a hybrid safety/linebacker role.
“I thought his workout went well,” defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale said. “You’ve heard me say before that we’re a position-less defense, so we’ll find someplace he likes when we get him here and we’ll go from there.”
