Last time Coughlin's job was on the line, Favre was in tears

I was doing a little research on the Bears-Packers game that ended the 2006 regular season. The Packers won that one, 26-7, as Rex Grossman was awful and was pulled at halftime. Just like this week, the Bears had locked up a bye in the playoffs heading into that game (in 2006, though, they had also locked up the top seed and home field advantage throughout). And in 2006 the Packers had been eliminated from the playoffs, mostly on the strength of the Giants’ win over the Redskins the previous night (which got them into the playoffs and saved Tom Coughlin's job, a game which Glauber wrote about here).

But what stuck out to me was the speculation that it was not only the last game of the season for the Packers, but the last game of Brett Favre’s career.

Here’s a quote from the AP story that day:

"If this is my last game, I want to remember it," Favre said, his voice cracking and tears streaming from his eyes. "It's tough. I love these guys. I love this game. What a great way to go out against a great football team. I couldn't ask for a better way to get out."

That was Dec. 31, 2006.

Some things never change.
