Marshall Newhouse left Sunday’s game against the Saints with a calf injury and the Giants are not yet sure if he’ll be available to play in their upcoming game against Washington.

“Right now we’re going to evaluate him as the week goes on and see how he does and how he recovers,” Ben McAdoo said of the starting right tackle on Monday. “We don’t know how significant it is or how long he’ll be out at this point, whether he’ll be able to play or not this week. It looks like he’ll be out of practice, especially early on , and we’ll take a look at it.”

If Newhouse is unable to play, the Giants have two options to replace him. Bobby Hart, a second-year lineman, stepped in during the game on Sunday. The Giants also could insert veteran Will Beatty into the position. Beatty re-signed with the Giants at the end of the preseason and has been inactive in the first two games of the year. He has not played in a game of any kind since December 2014.

“He’ll compete to be up this week,” McAdoo said of Beatty. “I see a guy who is getting his football legs underneath him. He’s working well with his pads and the Thursday practices have been great for him.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan was asked about Beatty late last week and gave a slightly less optimistic review of Beatty’s readiness.

“He’s still a work in progress,” Sullivan said. “Still trying to get a sense of him being acclimated from the football standpoint and also schematically, knowing exactly what we do. We do so much at the line of scrimmage, in terms of calls, so that’s going to take some time. It’s really too early to say.”

That was said when Newhouse was healthy and the offensive line was functioning well coming off the win over the Cowboys.

The Giants may no longer have the luxury of that time anymore.

Other injury notes

Two other notable injuries occurred on Sunday: RB Rashad Jennings hurt his hand and required X-rays before reportedly leaving the locker room with a heavy wrap on the injured area, and safety Mykkele Thompson suffered a knee injury. McAdoo said he expects Jennings to be on the practice field on Wednesday.

“We’ll see how practice goes,” he said. “We’ll know more when we see him out there on Wednesday. He’ll be limited in some form or fashion, but we’ll know more when we see him.”

The Giants used Shane Vereen at running back for most of the time after Jennings was hurt, but they also turned to Orleans Darkwa for one offensive series. Bobby Rainey and rookie Paul Perkins are the other running backs on the roster, though neither has taken an offensive snap in the first two games.

As for Thompson, McAdoo said he will “be out for a few weeks” with a knee injury. Thompson made his NFL debut on Sunday after missing all of his rookie year with an Achilles injury and being inactive in the opener in Dallas.

The Giants had two injury concerns heading into Sunday’s game against the Saints in defensive ends Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) and Olivier Vernon (wrist). They wound up playing 59 and 60 of the team’s 62 defensive snaps, respectively.

“They were playing nicked up, played hard, played a lot of snaps,” McAdoo said after the game.
