The Giants brought Perry Fewell and Antrel Rolle in because they wanted a defense that focuses on turnovers. It took all of two plays for them to show that ability.
On the Jets's second play of the preseason game last night Rolle intercepted a pass thrown by Mark Sanchez that had been popped into the air by the coverage of Deon Grant and Michael Boley and returned it 51 yards to the Jets' 1. It appeared that Rolle, who was zipping between would-be tacklers and picked up a block from Mathias Kiwanuka, had lunged into the end zone. But three plays later Brandon Jacobs put the six after the pick and gave the Giants a 7-0 lead.
Rough start for Dodge
Tom Coughlin takes a deep breath every time Matt Dodge's name is brought up and talks about having to be patient with the rookie punter. That patience was tested on the first two kicks last night.
Dodge, a strong-legged punter who was booming 85-yarders in practice on Saturday, was only able to get his first effort 44 yards downfield with a miserable hang time. And that was the best of his first two because the next one was blocked by Eric Smith, who made an inside move on Andre Brown and came up the middle to knock the ball away and out of bounds.
Giant steps
Anyone who was wondering how RB Ahmad Bradshaw's feet and ankle would be after surgery got an idea when he scooted through the Jets' defense on a 51-yard reception . . . Second-year WR Ramses Barden started for the Giants . . . First-round pick Jason Pierre-Paul sacked Sanchez late in the second quarter . . . CB Terrell Thomas (leg) did not practice late last week but was able to play in the game. WR Steve Smith (groin) and TE Kevin Boss (hamstring) return to practice Tuesday.
