According to the Giants, Mathias Kiwanuka showed up on Thursday complaining of a stiff neck. Head trainer Ronnie Barnes examined him and treated him for the stiff neck and Kiwanuka practiced but was sent for an MRI on Thursday evening.

Kiwanuka still had stiffness today and participated in practice while avoiding contact with his head and neck. After practice he was sent in to the Hospital for Special Surgery for a CAT scan and was examined by Dr. Russell Warren, who consulted with Dr. Frank Camissa, the spine specialist at HSS. The diagnosis is that Kiwanuka has a bulging cervical disc. Based on the initial examination and tests, it’s unclear when and how Kiwanuka suffered this injury.

The Giants will eliminate Kiwanuka’s contact with his head and neck area and the injury will be monitored. According to the Giants, there is no timetable on the recovery, which varies from case to case, as does the treatment for such an injury.

Antonio Pierce, the Giants’ linebacker and defensive captain last year, had his season end when he was placed on injured reserve with a bulging cervical disc in his neck. The Giants gave him several weeks to allow the disc to “quiet down” on its own at the time before deciding that his season would be over.
