I know we have quarterback issues and other things going on, but I wanted to backtrack a bit to the Jets’ touchdown when they left Brad Smith standing all by his lonesome out wide left. On that play, Terrell Thomas started out covering Smith but when he realized there were 12 men on the field he tried to get off. He sprinted across to the Giants’ sideline but did not make it before the snap and the Giants were flagged for having the extra player.

Worse, he abandoned the receiver.

“That’s the last thing you want to do,” he said.

So what happened?

“It was just a miscommunication,” he said. “I was trying to make the right decision getting off the field. I should have called a timeout. But in preseason you learn from those mistakes and it was good that it happened so we can fix it.

“We just didn’t practice that during the preseason. I was never on goal line corner, Corey usually was, and I just wasn’t prepared for it. I didn’t get the signal and it was a miscommunication.

“In my head my first thought was to call a time out. But in the preseason I thought let me just try to get off the field. I’m happy it happened. It’s something we can use to learn from and get better.”
