The Giants got some distressing news in the first few minutes of practice today when Osi Umenyiora had to leave the field with swelling in his knee. It was the second time in three days Umenyiora missed a practice because of the injury that Tom Coughlin referred to earlier in the week as “wear and tear.” Now that wear and tear has Umenyiora listed as questionable on the injury report and a game-time decision for the Giants.

“Osi came out here, he did have some swelling, so we sent him back inside,” Coughlin said.

Umenyiora had surgery to repair his knee in 2008 and missed the entire season. That was his left knee. This new injury is to his right knee. He was wearing a soft brace on the right knee when he worked in Thursday’s practice.

Ironically, Hakeem Nicks is also listed as questionable for the game and will be a gametime decision. Somehow, though, that doesn’t seem as dire. Same 50-50 chance according to the injury report, but Nicks’ 50 looks a lot better than Osi’s.

Nicks did practice today after missing the last two days with an ankle injury he sustained in Sunday’s three-touchdown game. He told reporters that he was able to run and cut on the ankle today and said he expects to play on Sunday against the Colts.

Also expecting to play is Aaron Ross, who missed the opener with a torn plantar fascia.

“I had Week 1 circled on my calendar, but it didn’t work out,” Ross said. “Of course, this was the next week and I was praying that I had the opportunity to come and play this week.”

Coughlin said that Chase Blackburn, Will Beatty, Kevin Boss and Phillip Dillard will be out for Sunday’s game against the Colts. Shaun O’Hara was limited in practice, taking about half the reps, which is a very good sign for him. “He’s OK to go,” Coughlin said.
