Holmgren denies interest in Cowboys

Browns president Mike Holmgren, who won a Super Bowl title with the 1995 Packers and led the 2005 Seahawks to the Super Bowl, said he hasn’t expressed any interest in the Cowboys job in the event Jason Garrett is fired after the season.

Holmgren told reporters in Cleveland today that a report on Sunday that he had “serious interest” in the Cowboys’ job because of the strong roster and his relationship with team owner Jerry Jones, was off the mark.

“I haven't booked my tickets to Dallas,” Holmgren said. “I just wanted to say, I got back from Arizona, [wife] Kathy and I were down there for the bye week. . . And I was told this morning there was some stuff in the papers about Dallas, and I just wanted to make something very, very clear. One, the last time I talked to anybody about my future was when I talked to you guys in this room [after Jimmy Haslam’s purchase of the Browns was completed late last month]. I haven't talked to a single soul. That's the first thing.

"The second thing is I don't know, I honestly don't know what the future holds or what I want to do. Honestly. Believe me on that. Thirdly, I've always been, quite honestly, bothered by the speculation during the season when coaches are trying to work and they're fighting like crazy for their jobs, and I would never do that. I would never do that to anybody. I have tremendous respect for obviously Jason Garrett." 

Holmgren said he is indeed friendly with Jones with whom he served on the competition committee during his coaching days. “We worked on the committees a long time together. But I just wouldn't do that. So help me with that, please. I'm telling you the way it is. I have no idea how any of that stuff gets started, but I'm telling you the straight scoop on that, OK?"
