Injuries to 49ers' Brandon Jacobs, LaMichael James not too severe

Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James, two key additions to the San Francisco 49ers, were carted off the field Saturday night with leg injuries.

Neither injury -- to Jacobs' left knee and James' left ankle -- is expected cost either one his season, coach Jim Harbaugh said after the 49ers lost their exhibition, 20-9, to the host Texans.

The injury to former Giants running back Jacobs appears to be the more serious. His knee collided with cornerback Kareem Jackson's helmet at the end of an 8-yard, first-quarter run.

"He's going to miss a little time," Harbaugh said of Jacobs. "The ACL is good. The patella is good. It'll be some time, but we'll see."

Kirk Cousins: three touchdowns, no sacks.

If preseason stats could be taken at face value, one could have fun cobbling together yet another Washington Redskins quarterback controversy, this one involving a pair of rookies.

For one thing, fourth-rounder Cousins from Michigan State is naturally more comfortable in the pocket than No. 2 overall pick Griffin, who didn't get a chance to learn the nuances of a pro-style offense at Baylor.

"We never really got into a rhythm," Griffin said. "I think everyone on the [first string] wanted to go back in the second half."

Of course, there is no such QB competition. Griffin played with and against starters during the first half of Saturday night's 33-31 loss to the Chicago Bears. Cousins was on the field in the second half with quite a few players who will soon be looking for work. Griffin would have to be inept or injured not to remain the No. 1 guy when the regular season opens, and so far, he's been neither.

Titans linebacker Gerald McRath will have season-ending surgery to repair a partially torn patella tendon in his left knee. The three-year veteran said he aggravated his knee Aug. 6 when the Titans practiced against Atlanta in Georgia.
