Sayville native and former Notre Dame and Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan was waived by the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.

After signing as an undrafted free agent in the offseason, Coan was fourth on Indianapolis’ depth chart behind Matt Ryan, Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger. NFL teams are required to reduce their rosters to 53 players before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.

Coan, 23, played in three preseason games for the Colts and completed 10 of 19 passes for 91 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and a passer rating of 83.4.

After breaking his right foot and missing his entire senior season for Wisconsin in 2020, Coan transferred to Notre Dame as a graduate student in 2021. He threw for 3,150 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions with a completion percentage of 65.7 and passer rating of 152.2.

Coan ended his collegiate career by completing 38 of 68 passes for 509 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in a 37-35 loss to No. 9 Oklahoma State in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day. His performance broke the bowl game’s all-time passing record.

Coan also led Wisconsin to a Rose Bowl appearance in 2020 against Oregon.

A star at Sayville, Coan was one of the top high school quarterbacks in Long Island history. He passed for 9,787 yards and 128 touchdowns, leading his team to victory in the 2015 Long Island Class III championship game. Coan won Newsday’s Hansen Award in 2016 as the top player in Suffolk County and was a three-time Newsday All-Long Island selection.
